Less + More

I loved a quote from a colleague today — “For the first time, in as long as I can remember (possibly ever), I rang in the new year without a giant wish for change in some aspect of my life.  Instead, I found myself just thankful; thankful for a husband I adore, a job where I feel appreciated and inspired, and good health. I wish the same and more for each of you.

Ten Wellness Lessons from 2013 Worth Carrying Forward

The media is ripe with health information this time of year, offering millions tips, ideas, facts, regimens, and deals to help people kick-start their “healthiest year yet.”  Now, and throughout the year, the volume of health and wellness information can be overwhelming, making it hard to find signal in the noise. RUN INTERVALS – SLOW AND STEADY – GO PALEO – FAST – DON’T FAST – FAST TWICE A WEEK – EAT BUTTER – EAT COCONUT OIL – MEDITATE – DRINK JUICE – DON’T DRINK JUICE – BE HAPPY – EEEK, THOSE CARBS MIGHT RUIN YOUR BRAIN!  Read more

Unconditional Love

A train of words scrolled across the screen at Glide last Sunday. Amen. Hallelujah. Right On. Shalom. Salaam. Namaste. The diversity of spiritual practices encapsulated by those few words shows what Glide is all about – radical inclusion. Glide makes space for everyone, no matter where they come from or where they’re going or what they were raised to believe or not believe. It opens its doors to all kinds of people, asking only one thing: that they give and receive unconditional love. Read more

‘Tis the Season of Intention

“Make a wish,” my son urged as I prepared to blow out the glimmering candles on my birthday cake last week.  And as I have every other year of my life, I went ahead and made one — silently sending it out into the ether, careful not to say it aloud for fear it might not come true.  Lying in bed that night, I replayed the familiar scene in my head: little boy tells mom to make wish…mom closes her eyes and wishes…mom blows out candles…everyone hopes wish will magically be granted…candles are removed from cake…everyone eats cake. Bringing Back Play

I talk a lot about the “little eyes that are watching” and “little ears that are listening,” and the opportunity every single grown-up has to impact the messages that get through. This view has been powerful for me, forcing me to think more carefully about what matters most and more proactively about the life I want to live and the stories I want to pass along. It keeps me honest and striving and accountable for my choices.

But there’s another side to this message that I don’t talk about as much: we have a lot to learn from them too. Read more

Sleepless Heroes

Fast Company‘s December issue features an impressive set of “highly productive people.”  The people profiled are all operating at intense levels, having achieved huge success in varied fields like cooking and writing and entertainment and corporate deal-making.  Beyond the thread of success, there were a few other themes — a strong sense of purpose (yay), clear priorities (hooray), genuine love for their work (wa-hoo), and not very much sleep (thunk). Our Message

This is the sound of all of us, singing with love and the will to trust.” – The Wailin’ Jennys

The Internet is an amazing place. Thanks to a few friends who kindly shared a recent post, it’s reached more people than I ever could have imagined. According to one comment, it’s even on someone’s fridge (blush). Read more

Give Light

There are some things in life you can’t control — like a violent typhoon descending on your country, or your child getting leukemia.  But there are other things you can control — like donating time and money to help people in the Philippines, and transforming your city into Gotham City to make a 5-year-old’s day (SO AWESOME).  Weeks like this one — full of the sharp contrasts that define the human condition — make it easy to stay grounded in what really matters. Tequilla and Crickets

Snapshot of last week’s 60-hour trip to Mexico City: 24 hours spent sitting in airports, planes, or taxis; 11 hours spent sleeping; 45 minutes spent exercising*, 3 shots of tequila drunk; two tacos (intentionally) full of crickets eaten. By any traditional measures of health, this 2.5-day stretch was an epic fail. And apparently it showed – the border control agent at customs in Los Angeles looked down at my passport, looked up at me, and remarked ”wow, you look so much older now than you do in this passport photo!” Read more

Fresh Start

Driving home from work today, I was replaying my frustrations from the week in my head: not enough sleep, TOO MUCH SITTING, medium performance on a work project, didn’t meet my workout goals, TOO MUCH SITTING, missing friends and family, picked kids up too late from school, ordered takeout instead of cooking, TOO MUCH SITTING.  The week wasn’t terrible by any stretch; it just didn’t quite go as planned (first world problems, I know).  Adding up these little first world things, however, I finished the week with an empty tank, not energy and inspiration.
