It Starts with You

My running route this morning overlapped with the route my husband takes to drop our kids off at school.  We live in a low-traffic residential neighborhood, so he was able to slow down for a bit so the kids could say hi.  They rolled down their windows — conveniently cleaning them of the morning dew — and proceeded to hoot and holler and yell “go mommy” and make “I love you” signs with their little hands.  It doesn’t get much better than that. Less + More

I loved a quote from a colleague today — “For the first time, in as long as I can remember (possibly ever), I rang in the new year without a giant wish for change in some aspect of my life.  Instead, I found myself just thankful; thankful for a husband I adore, a job where I feel appreciated and inspired, and good health. I wish the same and more for each of you.

Ten Wellness Lessons from 2013 Worth Carrying Forward

The media is ripe with health information this time of year, offering millions tips, ideas, facts, regimens, and deals to help people kick-start their “healthiest year yet.”  Now, and throughout the year, the volume of health and wellness information can be overwhelming, making it hard to find signal in the noise. RUN INTERVALS – SLOW AND STEADY – GO PALEO – FAST – DON’T FAST – FAST TWICE A WEEK – EAT BUTTER – EAT COCONUT OIL – MEDITATE – DRINK JUICE – DON’T DRINK JUICE – BE HAPPY – EEEK, THOSE CARBS MIGHT RUIN YOUR BRAIN!  Read more

Unconditional Love

A train of words scrolled across the screen at Glide last Sunday. Amen. Hallelujah. Right On. Shalom. Salaam. Namaste. The diversity of spiritual practices encapsulated by those few words shows what Glide is all about – radical inclusion. Glide makes space for everyone, no matter where they come from or where they’re going or what they were raised to believe or not believe. It opens its doors to all kinds of people, asking only one thing: that they give and receive unconditional love. Read more

‘Tis the Season of Intention

“Make a wish,” my son urged as I prepared to blow out the glimmering candles on my birthday cake last week.  And as I have every other year of my life, I went ahead and made one — silently sending it out into the ether, careful not to say it aloud for fear it might not come true.  Lying in bed that night, I replayed the familiar scene in my head: little boy tells mom to make wish…mom closes her eyes and wishes…mom blows out candles…everyone hopes wish will magically be granted…candles are removed from cake…everyone eats cake. Keep Calm, and Keep Moving

Life can feel overwhelming this time of year, as we catapult toward the end of one year and the beginning of another.  Family dynamics.  Work deadlines.  A tip for the paper boy.  White elephants.  Hand-drawn notes for the teachers.  Ice on the windshield.  Coats for the coat drive.  Tree trimming.  Holiday parties.  Cold, dark mornings.  “Can we please go to Santa’s house?  Pluheeeeeeese?” Read more

Bringing Back Play

I talk a lot about the “little eyes that are watching” and “little ears that are listening,” and the opportunity every single grown-up has to impact the messages that get through. This view has been powerful for me, forcing me to think more carefully about what matters most and more proactively about the life I want to live and the stories I want to pass along. It keeps me honest and striving and accountable for my choices.

But there’s another side to this message that I don’t talk about as much: we have a lot to learn from them too. Read more

Sleepless Heroes

Fast Company‘s December issue features an impressive set of “highly productive people.”  The people profiled are all operating at intense levels, having achieved huge success in varied fields like cooking and writing and entertainment and corporate deal-making.  Beyond the thread of success, there were a few other themes — a strong sense of purpose (yay), clear priorities (hooray), genuine love for their work (wa-hoo), and not very much sleep (thunk). Our Message

This is the sound of all of us, singing with love and the will to trust.” – The Wailin’ Jennys

The Internet is an amazing place. Thanks to a few friends who kindly shared a recent post, it’s reached more people than I ever could have imagined. According to one comment, it’s even on someone’s fridge (blush). Read more

I [Heart] Kale

I made a CRAVEWORTHY kale salad last weekend that I’ve been meaning to post here.  I found it on Epicurious.com when I searched “kale brussels sprouts salad” (trying to clean out the fridge), and I can’t wait to make it again.  It was super easy, unique, memorable, and a great accompaniment to our main dish that night, turkey chili.  The kids didn’t like it much (I save their kale for smoothies), but at least they could tell that we did (the bowl was scraped clean).
