Autonomy + Flats

Tina Fey Quote

My sleep and workout time trumped my writing time this morning, so with just a few minutes to post, I thought I’d share something that I’ve loved ever since I read it for the first time a few years ago.  It’s a short piece of advice from Tina Fey with a big message: “lead her [toward] something where she can make her own hours but still feel intellectually fulfilled and get outside sometimes and not have to wear high heels.”

Included in Fey’s hilarious “A Mother’s Prayer for Her Daughter,” Fey doles out some advice that applies to all of us:

  • Strive for some level of autonomy in our work
  • Keep our brains challenged
  • Stay connected to nature + feel the sun on our backs sometimes
  • Wear high heels by choice, not force

What do you think…could it really be this simple?  What’s your hope — for the people you love…and for yourself?
