That Guy

My company had a Valentine’s Day half marathon this morning, which was my ideal way to kick off the day with love!  Well, that and the delicious heart-shaped, kid-crafted pancakes I gobbled down before the race.  But this post isn’t about the race….it’s about the guy behind the race.

Our lives are full right now, with two jobs and two little kids and lots of balls in the air.  So my workout time — well, any sort of “me time” — requires sacrifice on my husband’s part, just as his workout time requires sacrifice on mine.  We’re trying to take care of our health and our souls while we also take care of two precious little people, and that is a comfortable balance on great days and an intense negotiation on the tougher ones.

So today, I want to say out loud how incredibly grateful I am that my husband supports the things I love to do…that he makes tradeoffs in his own life to support things I want to do in mine.  I’m thankful that he makes breakfast while I’m at 6am spin class on Tuesdays…that he gets up at an insanely early hour on Saturdays to enable us both to run before too much of the day sneaks away…that he watches the kids during races…that he encourages me to set goals and work hard…and that he cheers me on.  And I love that I can do the same things for him.

On this Valentine’s Day, consider sending a quick note of gratitude to whoever is behind your races…behind your workouts…behind your life.  Whether it’s your partner or your mom or your kid or your friend or your neighbor, let them know how they’re making an impact.  And do your part to cheer them on as well.

Wishing you a day and a weekend filled with love.

  3. I hear you – with a 1yr old and 2yr old in the house, solo time does not come easy. I’m so thankful that my man and I share a commitment to healthy living. It takes two to pull it off, two to set goals, two to encourage, and two to pull the whole thing off.
