10 Things I Want My Daughter to Know About Working Out

Mid-way through a recent group exercise class, the teacher lost me.  She didn’t lose me because of some complicated step sequence or insanely long set of burpees; I mentally checked out because of a few words she kept saying over and over.  “Come on!  Get that body ready for your winter beach vacation!  Think about how you want to look at those holiday parties!  PICTURE HOW YOU’LL LOOK IN THAT DRESS!Read more

Give Light

There are some things in life you can’t control — like a violent typhoon descending on your country, or your child getting leukemia.  But there are other things you can control — like donating time and money to help people in the Philippines, and transforming your city into Gotham City to make a 5-year-old’s day (SO AWESOME).  Weeks like this one — full of the sharp contrasts that define the human condition — make it easy to stay grounded in what really matters. Grocery Circus

For better or for worse, grocery shopping in our household is a multi-step affair.  After years of planning menus and making lists, we finally have it down to a science.  The Saturday routine involves one parent (we take turns), two munchkins, lots of samples, and (thank goodness) ZERO TRIPS TO SAFEWAY.  Here’s our formula: Read more

Tequilla and Crickets

Snapshot of last week’s 60-hour trip to Mexico City: 24 hours spent sitting in airports, planes, or taxis; 11 hours spent sleeping; 45 minutes spent exercising*, 3 shots of tequila drunk; two tacos (intentionally) full of crickets eaten. By any traditional measures of health, this 2.5-day stretch was an epic fail. And apparently it showed – the border control agent at customs in Los Angeles looked down at my passport, looked up at me, and remarked ”wow, you look so much older now than you do in this passport photo!” Read more

Hug It Out

My great aunt takes a regular yoga class in her senior living community.  Over 80, yet as sharp and centered and spirited as someone half her age, yoga suits her.  The sparse wrinkles punctuating her skin are evidence of the calm drumbeat of her life.  Her steady voice and kind eyes reflect her gentle nature.  And her mind is wide open (except when it comes to conservative politics). Fresh Start

Driving home from work today, I was replaying my frustrations from the week in my head: not enough sleep, TOO MUCH SITTING, medium performance on a work project, didn’t meet my workout goals, TOO MUCH SITTING, missing friends and family, picked kids up too late from school, ordered takeout instead of cooking, TOO MUCH SITTING.  The week wasn’t terrible by any stretch; it just didn’t quite go as planned (first world problems, I know).  Adding up these little first world things, however, I finished the week with an empty tank, not energy and inspiration. A Long Life

I met a woman last week who successfully returned to a high-power job after 10 years out of the workplace.  “The second I saw my twins, I knew I couldn’t go back to work,” she said.  “Without a doubt, I wanted to devote my energy to those teeny tiny humans.  I made the decision so quickly that I even surprised myself.”  Ten years later, her kids are comfortably in elementary school, and she’s back in the office, charging ahead in her second (and likely not last) career push. 10 Simple Ways to Boost Your Day

Eat from the rainbow.  Yes, find something red, orange, yellow, green, blue AND purple to get into your meals this week.  And skittles don’t count.

Stand tall.  It’s a great way to work out your core every minute of every day.  No gym required.

Do a walking meeting.  Conference rooms are so 2000.  If you really want to step it up, try a biking or running meeting. Read more

The Musts

MUST exercise.  SHOULD avoid eating too much sugar.  MUST sleep.  SHOULD be more on top of the ins and outs of the debt crisis.  MUST deeply know and understand my children.  SHOULD get to know the neighbors better.  MUST do a good job at what’s on my plate today.  SHOULD volunteer more.  MUST do work I believe in.  SHOULD have a career path.  MUST feel sunshine during the day.  SHOULD finish one more work task.   Read more

Making It Work

A few years ago, when our kids were just shy of one and three, my husband looked at me with exhausted eyes and said “if we get through these years without losing our jobs, getting divorced, or our kids resenting us, I’ll consider this time a success.” Hyperbole, yes. But that day, it felt like the absolute truth. He had spent the previous half hour scraping carrot puree off the kitchen floor and walls while I had physically barricaded our son’s door so he would stay in his room and go to sleep. Read more
